Dragey to the Loire

30 Sept - 1 Oct 09

Southeast to the Loire Valley through villages and towns such as Sourdeval (where we learned all about ‘le pneu crevée’ – flat tyre!), Mayenne and Saulges.

Our accommodation is in a 16th century chateau nestled into the side of a hill overlooking Amboise.

We arrived late, so there were limited options for dinner but ended up in a nice little bistro in Amboise with a very literal interpretation of Col’s order which translated as ‘smoked sausages and lentils’.

Spent the next day at the Chateau of Chenonceau, which was fascinating. Poor Louise de Lorraine, who painted her bedroom black in mourning for her lost babies.

Fresh flower arrangements all over the Chateau

Spoilt ourselves in the l‘Orangerie restaurant at lunch rather than the self serve chips-with-everything option - beautiful room and food, felt very indulgent!
Simple dinner in the garden after that – the weather still perfect, as it has been ever since we arrived … well into the 20s and mild at night.

Donna, remember the ‘wet dog in the Indian restaurant in the thunderstorm’ story? Well, picture this one - warm, starry night in a scented garden overlooking the lights of Amboise, good red wine, candlelit meal … and under the table, an asthmatic 18 year old French dog wheezing loudly and whining pathetically in hope of a pat and a share of our prawns. Very romantic!

Some assorted photos taken on the road...

Village crossroads all over France
